Some Thoughts on Manuscript Databases

“Some Thoughts on Manuscript Databases and Online Platforms with a Focus on Ancient China”

Conférence du Professeur Enno Giele de l’université de Heidelberg, chercheur invité du CRCAO.

Résumé :

The bounty of ancient Chinese manuscripts finds has grown to such proportions that the field seems ripe to focus its attention on how to deal with all these finds, integrate them into existing frameworks, and make them useful to non-specialists rather than to invoke the trope of “rewriting history” every time some new text is unearthed. While the digitalization of received historical sources has seen a centralization around one or two websites used most often, the integration of manuscript sources into them is still very basic, if it exists at all, and the plurality of palaeography platforms is still characterized by rank growth and regionality with each site focusing on certain types of manuscripts. This is unlikely to change, but this paper will nevertheless try and spend some thought on what an ideal, multi-purpose online platform catering to the diverse needs of users could (theoretically) look like.

Son intervention sera suivie d’un temps d’échanges et de discussions autour de ces questions.
